This is a Memorial Day Weekend trip. If you'll be attending this trip, please come to the test pack on May 16!! especially if you haven't been on one of our trips before.
So I cheated and went to Trails.com instead. I'm most interested in the Seneca Creek/High Meadows Loop.
A moderate 13.5 mile loop that takes you up Seneca Creek to a walk-up campsite, traverses a ridge in the Allegheny Mountains, then comes down by way of an old logging road. There are lots of "cascades" and streams, and the second night camps in a meadow.
From the first night camp in the Judy Springs Site, there are a number of short trails that can be explored to lengthen the trip. the campsite is only a few miles in, so there should be plenty of time to get there & set up camp after the Via on Saturday. The second day we can explore from the campsite or push on.
There are a few river crossings ("fords", they are called; need to look more into that) and the logging trail is reported to be rather muddy. Bring extra socks. Plenty of water. We may be able to build a fire, even. It looks like dogs are welcome in the backcountry of West Virginia and I know mine would love to come. Looking into it.
More comprehensive gear list coming soon. bring your own food. Gear is probably available to share, we'll discuss soon....
The loop starts and ends at the same trailhead! No switching cars!
I will be staying Friday night in Seneca Shadows Campground, then do the Via Ferrata on Saturday morning. We'll head out into the backcountry after that. If you don't want to do the Via you can probably start out early & set up camp & explore, or hike the 30 miles of trails in Nelson Rocks Preserve until the rest of us are finished.
The loop is short enough that if we went straight through, we could possibly finish early enough Monday (on a downslope!) with enough time for other activities (rock climbing, kayaking, caverns, etc.)
There will be a small cost to stay in the campground on friday (much easier than driving 5 hours, hiking a few miles and setting up camp in an unknown forest at 2 am).
it's set at 20 people right now; if more than 15 go, we'll probably split into two groups and do the same loop from different ways. If more than 20-24 want to go, for environmental reasons we'll need to look into an additional trail. I'm also going to post the trip on thebackpacker.com and invite the Blairstown Backpacking group.

Despite an arduous climb up a neverending hill through a trail of mud, this was still an awesome weekend with a great bunch of people. Looking forward to the next one.
OMG don't forget the cameras everyone! still and video! we'll put them on our new blog!
LOL i was trying to figure out why the "paid" list and the "yes" RSVPs didn't match up....i never added myself to the list oops!
Between the campers and backpackers, we've got 43 people going on this WV trip. How awesome is that? Great job Amy and Heidi! Get Out Philly rules!
Hey Everyone,
FYI there is a message board stream about carpooling. So if you need a ride or can give one check it out. :)
If you guys need a ride, feel free to take the initiative to email someone who is (or may be) driving. Also, talk to people about renting together. We seem to have a lot of people looking for rides
I am also interested in carpooling from So NJ. I can drive, but have a 2 door solara. I can take three others if two aren't really tall. I can also take off late morning on Friday.
Hello everyone!
I am new at backpacking and am excited to try it on this trip! I am looking to see if I can ride with someone. I can take off Friday and go whenever. I will of course help with gas and any tolls. Thanx!

Please do everything you can to make the test pack! would like to meet as many people as possible so we can figure out how to handle all the options.....:)
I am hoping to car pool too. I just don't think I can take off; I'm a teacher in poor school that can't afford subs. But if anyone is leaving around 3:30 or 4 can come with me or I with them. I have a truck so I can only fit one. But willing to chip in on gas to ride with another. Also, if I could be with the faster pace group that would be nice, but if not....well that is ok too.
i'm hoping to take friday off too!! still have to see if i can get the rest of the weekend off though LOL...
Anyone want to leave early Friday and carpool? Getting there at 12-1am doesn't sound all that wonderful. Planned on taking that day off. Anyone else thinking that way?
I'd be in favor of being with the faster group, especially if you don't need much help with the moderately-paced group. I would like to head home by around 1pm on Monday. I'd like to climb on Monday morning is we have any people that have and can set up ropes.
the trail can probably be done by faster people in two days. then you could rock climb on Monday. let me know if anyone is interested in that; would probably mean splitting into two groups and going the other way
i doubt it; this is the backcountry......would you really want to lug harnesses & biners & 100 foot coils of rope in your pack????
Are there places on the trail (and time) to rock climb if we have someone to set up ropes?
