Heading out west this time to Micheaux State Forest and Caledonia State Park. Saturday we'll do a 6-8 mile loop to Chimney Rocks (aka Buzzard's Peak), including the Appalachian Trail. This is a rambling loop with a few short, steep ascents and a rock scramble to the peak. Besides this steep climb, the trek offers a great view of the Michaux Forest and Waynesboro Reservoir and the gentle gurgling of Tumbling Run as it meanders under a canopy of Hemlocks.
If the weather warms up we might get the first bit of spring green. This is my favorite time of year to hike (if it's not too cold!) Everything a greyish brown, but with the earth just beginning to wake up & grow it's green spring fuzz.
Sunday we could do more hiking, or biking (there are a few bike trails in the park) but I'd love to check out the historical area of the park as well as Gettysburg if possible, which is only a few miles away (and on our way home to Philly!)
.
Lodging:
Caledonia has two "unique houses" available; I've booked house #2, a two-story frame house with a modern kitchen, closed-in porch, 1½ baths, dining room, living room, central heat and three bedrooms that sleeps ten people. No rustic lean-to, this! If you've stayed in the "cabins" at Pine Grove Furnace you know what this will be like! We'll put a few people in each room as usual; bring your sleeping bag and your earplugs!
What to Bring:
The weather could go either way, so plan to bring your cold weather or your spring hiking gear. Will update as it gets closer.
Don't forget your water bottle, sleeping bag and a roll of toilet paper!
Transportation:
Caledonia is about 2 1/2 hours from Philadelphia, outside Harrisburg. See the Carpool Spreadsheet below to coordinate rides.
Food:
Bring your own food--breakfast, lunch, dinner & snacks. If anyone wants to coordinate a Saturday night group dinner, please let me know.
We will also need to bring our own pots & pans & dishes...the cupboards will be bare! Let's try to coordinate this on the carpool spreadsheet so we don't have a dozen frying pans and giant saucepans....
Disclaimer:
I have never been to this park nor stayed in these cabins, and can't verify that the information provided on the DCNR website is accurate. I have never hiked this trail, and make no claims to be leading or guiding. Hike at your own risk. Your YES RSVP and payment indicated that you have read and agree to abide by the Get Out Philly Liability Release and the Good Member Guide.
Wait List:
If the wait list gets real long I'll see about reserving the other cabin at Caledonia for a max of 20 people. If this is the case we'll need a second hiking group and a second volunteer leader.
If you want to go but don't have immediate internet access to RSVP as soon as the spot opens, just shoot me an email.
