"Meet at the recreation/picnic area between the two baseball diamonds. I'll be wearing a Get Out Philly t-shirt and send my phone number :)"
About the Kelly's Run/Pinnacle Trail System:
The trail is challenging, requiring careful footing over rocks and some steep climbs, but the scenery makes it well worth the effort. The trail follows Kelly's Run as it works its way to the Susquehanna River, passing through deep cliffs of Wissahickon schist. Along the trail you can see a broad diversity of plants dominated by ancient hemlocks, chestnut, oak, rhododendron and mountain laurel, Pennsylvania's state flower. Kelly's Run is one of many areas PPL has designated as a "natural area," which means the area will remain protected in its natural state.
Pinnacle Overlook offers a breathtaking view of the Susquehanna River valley. It's the perfect place for a picnic. It has water and toilet facilities.
Details:
We'll meet at the Holtwood Recreation area at 10 am. Google maps says it's about one hour 40 minutes from Philadelphia. You'll want to check out the website below for specific instructions to the picnic area! Carpool Spreadsheet has been posted; let's rideshare and save gas!
I have never hiked this trail, and make no claims to be leading or guiding. Hike at your own risk. Dogs welcome but it is a rocky hike. Trail maps may be available at the picnic area when we arrive.
We can eat lunch on top of the Pinnacle, and of course head out afterward for dinner! :) I'm interested in poking around the Lock 12 Historic Area by the dam afterwards.
I'll collect a $1 donation for our new non-profit on site.
