After bopping around in the mud last weekend, I need to walk on some terra firma. We start right outside the Down Home Diner at Reading Terminal. (see link below) We will meander west through center city north area to the Art Museum area looking for cool places. One will be the castle-like Eastern State Pennitentiary where we will leave off wayward members. At the Art Musuem we will take a spin around newly landscaped area, then head down below to the Water Works where we might stop for a minute. The museum is free.
Then onward south on the Schuylkill River Trail. We will see how far we can go. We'll then head downtown via small streets on a southern route. If we have time we may head over to the South Street area and Olde City, before heading back to the Reading Terminal.
I've located a zillion other neat places on our route. Here are some: Peter & Paul Basilica, Gallery 339, Rosen Wolf Gallery, Atwater Kent Museum, Phila Art Museum branches (in city), Civil War Cosortium, Dream Gardens, Romanian Museum and Gallery, etc. etc. etc. We'll walk by and if folks want to look closer we will. If the South Street Bridge was up we'd head over to the Anthropology Museum and Franklin Field. Unfortunately it's being rebuilt.
The hike will last 3.5-4.5 hours. Plan 6-9 miles, mostly flat.
We meet at this google map link outside the Down Home Diner at Reading Terminal.(may be different from main address): http://local.google.c... To carpool from Hill House (201 W Evergreen, 19118) meet at 1115am. Let me know. Here's a google map link. http://local.google.c...
If you change your mind please change your RSVP. No-shows may be barred from my events. Email or call if you have a problem. If the hike is full at the moment, just check back a day or two before.
Dogs are always fine if allowed in the area. Museums will not allow dogs.
“ Twenty-two folks hiked from Reading Terminal on this short sleeve weather day. We stopped at 3 museums for 10-15 minutes: Eastern State Penn, Rosenbach, Water Works. All great places. We walked by Franklin Field and the Anthropology Museum at U of Penn, the main building at Drexel U., 30th Street Station as well the the Art Museum.
Thanks to everybody. ”
