The Giant Stairs route is the "hike of hikes" in the Palisades--mostly rock scramble, steep ascent, steep descent. It is a three mile loop that begins and ends at the State Line Lookout in Alpine, NJ. There are views of the Hudson River, and the Bronx on the other side. The group that went last February thought it would be great to see in the fall!

Estimated time for the Giant Stairs loop will be about 2-4 hours; there are a lot of fun things to see on this trail, so we may break into two groups (i.e., speed hikers and "explorers" :) BYO lunch, or we can eat at the refreshment stand at the Lookout Inn after the Giant Stairs.

I make no claims to be leading or guiding. Hike at your own risk. The Palisades Park website states "Older children and adults should be in good shape and relatively confident of their hiking abilities if they wish to attempt this hike." This is not a recommended hike for kids under 12 or dogs. Copperhead snakes live in the rocks, although the website says they are "seldom seen." This is a park in an urban area. If the weather looks bad for that day I'll send out a cancellation email by 5 pm friday.

Maps are available at the lookout shelter/restaurant, you can also print your own from the link below.

Palisades website has a TON of info; history, trails, lookouts, directions, it's all there. Impressive.
The Carpool Spreadsheet. Drivers add your info. Passengers check with a driver before adding yourself to their car!

Amy, 7:15 will be fine. Do you and Tina have to insert your names in the spreadsheet?

7:30 from Lawnside sounds good...may want to make it 7:15 just in case. It's a bit confusing once you get on the parkway, last time it took us about half an hour just to find the right exit!

I live in Lawrenceville, off 95 Exit 5A, or even 295 last exits. Need a ride! Anyone going my way? I have updated the Carpool Spreadsheet. I can drive up to a closer meeting place. Please let me know.

Amy, you have been there. You were shooting for 7:00 on the spreadsheet.

    Hey Ames.

I was going to put myself on the spreadsheet but I'm not sure if I'm driving yet. I was going to ride with you guys but if we are desperate for driver then I was going to drive. I don't want anyone who wants to go to miss out.

I'd really appreciate it if people used the carpool spreadsheet, that way everyone knows what's being offered and it cuts down greatly on confusion..... :)

I have not been there before. 2.5hrs drive seems right. Think of the drive time to the Tappan Zee and a quick stop along the way. 7:30 departure? Andrew, Tina and Amy can fit very comfortably

I would actually like a ride but I can most certainly drive as well. If I do drive, I can fit 3 others comfortably and 4 if they don't mind getting a little cozy in the back. I have plenty of room for gear as well.
